Various industrial and commercial heat transfer systems operate at temperatures outside the normal freezing and boiling points of water. In order to protect heat transfer systems from freezing, bursting or boiling, a propylene glycol water mixture is used in secondary loop systems. In the case of cooling systems, the heat transfer fluid is used to reduce the freezing point below operational temperatures, whereas the heat transfer fluid is used to increase the boiling temperatures in alternative applications.

Propylene Glycol is one such heat transfer fluid commonly used as a secondary cooling and heating, anti-freeze coolant for beverage cooling / glycol systems, food manufacturing / processing systems, HVAC applications, laser cutting, milk and wine production equipment.

Why use Bracton Long Life Propylene Glycol over standard / plain Propylene Glycol?

Uninhibited glycols may seem an economical choice because of their relatively low initial cost and capabilities to protect against freeze and bursting. However, this is not the only factor to consider in your choice of heat transfer fluids! In reality, fungus and corrosion are a continual threat to your system that should not be ignored. Heat, oxygen, chlorides, sulfates, metallic impurities, and other contaminants can increase the rate of corrosion and growth of fungus, which eventually could lead to unscheduled system shutdowns, high maintenance expenses, and reduced system life span.

Standard or Plain propylene glycol lack corrosion inhibitors, which can actually increase the threat of corrosion in heat transfer systems. Glycols produce organic acids as they degrade, particularly when heated. If left in solution, the acids will change the fluid’s pH. With no corrosion inhibitors to buffer these acids and protect the metals in the system, the corrosion rate of a solution of standard / plain propylene glycol can be greater than that in plain water, which can be highly corrosive in its own right.
